A funny kind of magic

One of my Christmas presents (yes, near 6 months ago now!), was the acclaimed Riftwar saga from Raymond E. Feist — thanks Dave! The first in the series, the Magician is considered by many to be one of the finest fantasy reads of our time. I think I first heard of it when I was about 8; my eldest brother would have been reading Feist and encouraging me to get into it as well, having already set my feet upon the path of medieval literature with the world of Tolkien. This universe, filled with a myriad of amazing creatures and characters, drew me in, intoxicating me with its lore until I had searched far and wide (well, Warringah Library) for every book written about it. Bad idea; the Silmarillion kinda killed it for me. Yet, the idea of becoming a wizard was certainly one I had speculated upon.

Engaging Eddings only served to exacerbate that desire, as I encountered a boy who was only a wee bit older than me growing to learn about sorcery. Something about these lands filled with magic attracted me; I wasn’t sure what it was either. More than just the casual urge to turn a brother into a toad when the occasion suited, the idea of being able to alter the natural world seemed rather appealing.

Now, as I’ve grown older, such wishes have lain dormant, quietly being suppressed by the dusts of school and other non-wizardly things. So, receiving Riftwar for Christmas, began another saga of longing for a magical life. Reading another story of a boy-turned-magician brought to the surface thoughts and dreams long thought forgotten. As a result, I’ve decided my calling in life has been made. I will enter Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and become a wizard!

Wish me luck!

  2. Hugh Says:

good luck frads, taking on my old mantle of harry potter

  3. Vertigo Says:

You had dreams of being a wizard before and those dreams were fulfilled. I know because I fought beside you and my magical faery armies… damn that line between fantasy and… that other thing.

Real… real… real estate? Something along those lines.

  4. mle Says:

Everyday I lament being born a muggle.

If anyone I know can make a go of wizardry, it’d be you frads. Best of luck to you.

@Kellie: If that scar on my forehead is any indicator, it will be a while till my potions do anything other than cure a refreshing thirst. I can do card tricks though .. I know how much you love cards!

@Hugh: Ah yes, the original Harry .. although, there was that other guy, at Avalon ‘Woolies’, who looked almost even more the part! I’ve added Fallon to my ‘to-read’ list, thanks for the tip ;)

@Vertigo: Yes the line between fantasy and real estate was crossed that time .. probably because we had many an acre between us. In retrospect, a beastmaster isn’t very magical though… *casts Meteor Showers*

@mle: Thanks for the wishes. I only hope one day that you learn to be at peace with your overwhelming and undeniable muggleness .. or that you buy a fancy hat and robe and come to Hogwarts.

first of all, YAY for updating your blog FINALLY! You were getting even slacker than me in that respect (and that’s saying something.)

secondly, i’m annoyed at my keyboard that the moment because the “m” key is coming out as a “j” and the “h” a “t”. also, the space bar is squeaking, and im in the library so it’s echoing.. my point being, can you please wave that magic wand and fix it for me?!

last of all, i need a potion to make me magic! i’ve always wanted to be special, and i also want to be cool like you. :P

talk to you soon, good luck with the potions.. don’t poison anyone.. and to all fradams friends.. WATCH YOUR DRINKS WHEN AROUND HIM NOW! ;)

My wish to be in a world full of magic began when I was in primary school reading a story about a couple kids who found their grandmother’s magic items in the old upstairs dresser drawers. And those items took them to magical places and did magical things.. Ever since I’ve loved everything magical :D And I still believe ‘magic’ and certain aspects of the fantasy world did exist.. Just can’t figure out how to bring it back now =(

  8. Fradam Says:

@Brooke: Actually, I’m quite certain I have not seriously violated any kind of copyright with the image there. Trust me :D

First of all… sif I was slack with updating! :p Second.. I’m kind of curious… were the letters swapped on your keyboard? *waves wand and wonders what it will do… Lastly.. I can make people magic, but I’m not sure about that cool part :p

@Eystia: Well… you could buy a dresser and place it upstairs (well, I guess you guys are technically already upstairs), who knows what magical things could come into it!
